COMPUTER GENERATED CROSS STITCH CHARTS

Many people ask the difference between Computer Generated charts, and so called normal charts. I will do my best to explain.

The main difference is in the detail, which is like sewing a photo, and that a computer chart is normally sewn over the whole of the fabric. Not unlike these produced now by DMC under teh banner 'Gold Collection'. Also the chart will normally come on several sheets of A4 paper, with instructions on how it should be laid out to sew.

Some sellers say that they do not use the computer to generate the chart, only as a means to print it, which I personally can not believe, as it would take months to hand produce a chart which looks like a finished peice of art. You all know how long it takes to sew, so writing the pattern should take just as long if not longer.

Although good sellers will take time to ensure that the finished chart is corrected before it is offered for sale, and normally say so in the aution details. If in doubt I would always ask.

The other, and most critical I belive is the type of printer used to produce the chart. Dot matrix and Ink jet printers arenot so sharp as a laser printer, and good charts are normally printed by laser. This is not to say you may get one or two which are acceptable from other printers.

Sizing of the finished peice is dependent on fabric count, so a chart 180 x 250 stitches is approximately 10 x 14 inches on 18 ount fabric, but 13 x 18 inches on 14 count.

The chart will not change only the fabric count, and any good seller will give instructions for the most popular fabric counts. From the stitch count you can easily work out the finishes size of the peice. Do not forget to make allowance for the framing, normally 3 inches per side is more than enough.

As a beginner, these charts may seem a little daunting, but if you haev done some sewing you should not have a problem working this way. Once done you willfind it hard to go back to the so called normal charts, as they will not have enough detail.

Lastly, you should end up with a fairly unique peice, these charts are not mass produced, and therefore you will have one of only a few.

I do hope you find some of this information of use.
