Autographs On eBay - Ask Yourself These Questions First

6 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Buy An Autograph On eBayDoes the user keep any of their details private? - The majority of users that keep their details private have something to hide. What else has the user sold recently? - Very large quantities of autographs advertised or plenty of A List celebrities should start ringing alarm bells. Is there a high percentage of positive feedback and how many positive feedbacks does the user have? - Although not always a perfect guide, this does at least tell you if there have been any problems. Why is this user sellingmajor stars autographs so cheaply? - Anyone that obtains autographs 'in person' will tell you how very hard it is to obtain just one and you wouldn't sell it for pennies. What guarantee comes withthe COA? - The reputation of the dealer is far more important than a computer generated COA and any dealer of good standing would guarantee the autograph for life, not just a month or two.How long has the user been a member of eBay? - Everyone's got to start somewhere, but good history is always a little reassuring. Finally,it's always important to check which type of pen the autograph has been signed with as often the timelines do not match. For example, the ball point pen was commonly used from the 1950's, the felt tip from the 1960's, the sharpie (type of permanent marker) from the 1970's and the gold or silver sharpie from the 1980's. In other words, if you see a Stan Laurel autograph signed with a gold sharpie pen, you'll know it's a fake as he died in 1965.......many years before gold sharpie pens were used. Please help us to keep this great hobby free of forgers and vote yes below. By doing so you may help to encourage others to read this guide and hopefully benefit from it, thank you. Jason Mcloughlin at Scrawlers.

Walking Ware Pottery

AShort Guide to Finding and Buying Walking Ware Potteryon EbayWalking Wareis designed by Lustre Pottery. Itispopularly collectible and although the value ofsome pieceshas risen substantially, otherscan still be purchased relatively cheaplyon Ebay. The most popular search categories are Walking Ware, Carltonware and Lustre Pottery. As there have been occasions of 'passing off' and due to the number of designs, patterns and colors within the Walking Ware range,it can sometimes be difficult for the newer collector to differentiate the real from the fake. Designed in 1973the Walking Teaset was originally handmade in earthenwarebyRoger Michell and decroated by his partner, Danka Napiorkowska in their ownstudio in Yorkshire. Signed Lustre and datedon the base of the feet, these versionsare extremely rarealthoughoccasional Ebay sightingshave been known.Itsimmense popularity duringthe ninteen-seventiesled to the development of ajointly owned backstamp with Carltonwarewho manufacturedthe designs intheir thousands for the next 13 years. These versions are the most likely to appear on Ebay and are usually found in the Carltonware or Carlton Ware category. In 1986,an expansion in the free-trade marketproduced massive problems for thepottery industryand Carltonware closed down while Lustre Pottery moved to Cornwall where theymadesome finalpieces from the left over moulds. Theseversions have appearedon Ebay on occasion and are signed Lustre on the base only. The Price Kensington factory in Stoke-on-Trentcontinued to make some of the Walking Ware but it was not marked and neither was the decoration on these pots stipulated by Danka. It was the only factory however to gainRoger's permission to continuesmall-scale production ofLustre's Walking Ware designsand come up fairly often on Ebay although they are often mistaken for Carltonware Lustre Pottery versions. These unmarked versions can be difficult to differentiate from those that may have beenillegally made from original moulds. The best place to get advice is Lustre Pottery or a Walking Ware Publication.Potswrongly described asWalking Wareare deemed as 'passing off' and if seen areremoved. It is now known that some unmarked versions were made by Rising Hawk just after they were established in 1976. The feet on these versions are small and much more handmade looking than the Carltonware versions.In1998, Lustre Potteryproduced 2limited editionwalking teapots, the cross legs and the knobby. These studiodesigns were entirely newand each one was carefully numbered and signed on the base of the feet RSM

A brief guide to Welsh blankets

Welsh blanket buyers guideI have been asked on several occassions to provide some kind of guide for people looking to buy Welsh blankets. What is rare ? what is collectable ? what is old ? it can be a mine field amongst a host of different adverts , whose sellers have varying knowledge. This is by no means a definitive guide , but attempts to broadly catogorise the types of blankets that you are most likely to come across advertised on Ebay.Tapestry blankets Welsh Quilts or Carthens , different people call them different things. All are woven on a Dobby loom, two different pieces of cloth woven togrther to form a double cloth. These blankets , the most recognisable of Welsh blankets were made across Wales from C18th. Mostly in North wales . The ones that you are most likely to see these days are relics from the 1960s`

SELLING VINTAGE DARTS.

I am keith naylor.. 2 x eastern england darts champion/national finals/ news of the world etc/ many county titles etc. I have written for darts magazines, bbc book of darts etc. I have collected darts memorabilia for over 40 yrs, and have sold many on ebay.I would advise that you buy the best condition old darts you can afford. 1 good set is better than 10 damaged onesTry to get the old dull tungstens c 1970-80. better grip and good investment.I dont believe all these modern rare element additions to tungsten. ther a money making gimmick. If you average 60 with ordinary old darts you will not start hitting 180s because the darts are 20 times the price of yours. To start buy a large collection of mixed old darts/study them and then specialise. Occasionally you see 4 or 5 sets extras. flights/stems etc, listed together. snap em up. vg investmentSome times you have to settle for less quality if the item is really rare. The best investments are JIM PIKE.[THE ROLLS ROYCE OF ACCURACY.[ To get these in v good condition is becoming harder, as every body is after them]. Buy them when you have the chance. you can always sell them for a profit when needs must]just simply cut the wooden rattan cane stems to your size to adjust balance[same with newsteads]]. LEO NEWSTEAD[made by pike]- These are mega rare and hardly ever seen in superb condition.. PIKE FEATHERS WERE VERY GOOD

Sylvanian Families - Part II

Hi again and welcome to Part II of my guide to Sylvanian Families (SF)More Essential InfoSF were first launched in Japan (JP)in 1984 and are still going strong today - in fact Japan is the biggest SF market. There is even a theme park over there, with life-size characters and houses.JP SF are very much sought after, in particular the "Urban Life" Series, which includes families, furniture and buildings. This series was marketed as the "Up-market" Sylvanians, and the figures came with posh outfits, and the furniture and buildings were very elegant. All the furniture was brown, with red fabric, and included the Grand Piano and Gramaphone. These were only sold in Japan during the 1980's, with some families being relaunched in the 2000's, making them quite hard to find. The relaunched families were only sold in the 4-figure format (Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister) so it is even more difficult to get hold of the babies. Japanese figures are now either sold individually, or in 4-figure formats. When SF were launched in the UK in 1987, the figures were also sold individually. Some of the earliest families (Timbertops - Brown Bears, and Evergreens - Grey Bears) had older brothers and sisters, which are very desirable as they were never included in the re-issued families.Sought-After FamiliesThe Oakwood Squirrels (minus babies)Some of rarest and most sought-after families are: The Oakwood Squirrels, McBurrows Moles, andMeadows Mice.Figures such as the Meadows Mice family were only available with certain accessories/sets and are therefore even harder to get hold of.It is also difficult to obtain original clothing for figures, although there are several sellers on Ebay who make beautiful clothing sets, which can be purchased very reasonably.Imposters!Due to the popularity of SF during the 1980's and early 1990's, several manufacturers (Forrest Families and Maple Town)jumped on the bandwagon and started producing Sylvanian-esque toys, which appear regularly on the 2nd hand market. They are clothed very similarly to SF, and include some of the more exotic species of animal, such as: Cows, Hippos, Turtles, Parrots, Elephants, Tigers, andLeopards. Be wary of paying over the odds for these figures, especially if they are described as genuine Sylvanian Families - they are not!Selling TipsIf you are looking to sell Sylvanian Families, here are my top tips...If you are wanting to sell a large collection, I would recommend splitting it down into individual buildings and figures. Many times I have seen listings and wanted specific items which are rare, but haven't wanted to purchase duplicate items which I would have to sell on. You can achieve maximum prices by selling this way.It sounds really obvious, but try and take clear photos and point out any fur rubs - this is really important when selling older figures - if they are in very good condition collectors will pay more for themIf you have the original box for the item, try and include a picture of it in the listing, and also detail whether it is a Tomy or Flair figure. When Flair took over the distribution of Sylvanian Families they re-issued a number of original families and buildings which had different outfits/colours, and many collectors will buy all variations. If you are not sure how rare/sought-after (or not!) your figures are, then it pays to do some research! There are lots of fan-sites out there dedicated to SF, which offer up a wealth of information. I will also be happy to assist with any enquiries you may have or assistance you may need. This offer is available to anyone, and is made without agenda.

AUTHENTICATING AMBER

WHAT IS AMBER?Amber is the ancient resin or sap from trees from the Carboniferous period onwards and once polished make exquisite collectors pieces or jewellery items - especially those that contain insects or plant life. Most of the worlds amber deposits originate from the Baltic latitudes - though wedo personally get some Dominican from time to time - and dates from about 30 - 40 million years ago. A lot of Amber pieces contain inclusions - insects or plant matter that were caught as the resin oozed from the tree. A lot of insects look as if they put up a struggle as they fought to exit the glue-like substance. As it hardened, theinclusion was frozen in time, perfectly preserved, for millions of years to the present day. Each and every one is different and unique and make fascinating collectors pieces for all ages. FAKESLike a lot of things in the online market-place fake amber unfortunately is quite common. Usually originating from either Poland or China, (especially China) they are not amber pieces at all but carefully manufactured fakes and more often than not plastic! For example....classic fakes: A genuine piece containing a fly (we cleaned this from the rough ourselves): Fake amber has been used for centuries in cheap costume jewellery. With the expanded popularity of fossil collecting recently, the unscrupulous will always find a way to replicate and flood the market with some obvious and not so obvious fakes designed to snare the gullible and turn a quick profit. It is usually derived from a plastic or polymer that easily fails the tests outlined below. An added bonus is the fakers have no idea of the history of amber or what crawled the earth at the time! To test a piece of amber try these simple tests...... (i) Clean the piece with soap and water, then plain water. This rids it of any modern day "pollution". Lick it slowly - several times! It should leave a tingly taste quite distinct from the urggh taste you get from licking plastic. (ii) Smell it - real amber has a faint pine smell to it. Having said that fakers are wising up and spraying samples with car-freshener. (iii) Amber floats in salt water. That's how it's easily found washed up on beaches on the Baltic Coast, especially after storms. The amber gets stirred up from a layer known as blue earth, which is beneath layers of silt and clay on the ocean floor. To test, mix about 1 part salt to 2 parts water and dissolve the salt completely. Drop your speciman into it. Plastic and copal will sink and amber floats. (iv) Acetone test - drop some nail-polish remover onto the surface. If it becomes tacky its not amber. It could be copal (immature amber) so dont sling it until you have determined its not! (V) Burn it! Amber will not melt, just burn like incense. Plastic will melt and give off chemical fumes, Copal - a younger type of resin -will melt with a pine smell. This is the destructive method so don't do it unless you are more or less convinced it isn't real and have tried the above tests first. We are bona-fide dealers with an impeccable track record in all our ancient dealings and NEVER sell fake amber or fossils. We source our material from trusted suppliers worldwide and often clean and polish our own from the rough. This is an exciting way of discovering whats inside and can keep the kids busy for hours!Hopefully this guide will be helpful, especially to those new to the fascinating world of fossils.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY WHAT YOU ARE BUYING!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY...How many times have sellers been accused of selling something misleading? How many times have buyers accused sellers of misleading adverts? I'll tell you how many - hundreds, if not thousands of feedback throughout ebay is representative of either customers being genuinely mislead and sellers not being clear enough or buyers NOT READING CAREFULLY WHAT THEY ARE BUYING!!!!Sellers must be very careful when listing their items, particularly if they come in different guises and there are many variations of the same item that they are selling - be genuine in your description - do an almost idiot guide to what you are selling - this way buyers will be appreciative of your genuine description (even if it goes on abit) - at least this way you cannot be held responsible if the buyer gets it wrong.Buyers - you have the responsibility for knowing what you are bidding on. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN BID ON ITEMS - they do not always read the full print and often do not know what they are bidding on. Too many times i have come across other sellers feedback whereby they have been accused of selling something misleading - sometimes the customer is right and the advert is very misleading and as such deserve neutral or negative feedback, But on the other hand, sometimes the feedback is totally unjustified because the buyer has not read the advert correctly. As a powerseller on ebay i am very clear in my adverts what i sell. I accurately describe all my items as best i can - for it is in my interest to keep my customers happy at all times - because i want them to come back and appreciate the items i sell as being accurately described to the best of my ability. You too can enjoy this pleasure of selling many items tonew buyers and to welcoming return buyers by listing accurately, by making sure that customers can ask you questions if need be and bybeing as honest as possible. As a buyer please read carefully, take some time to ensure that you know what you are buying - if you are unsure then ask. If you don't getan answer from any questions asked - the simple solution is NOT TO BUY -then youwon't be disappointed if the item bought is not what you thought it was. On the other hand sellers - dotake time to answer questions and then your customer will happily buy your item with complete faith - Thanks for taking the time to read this guide - i hope it has helped you in some way - Please vote if it has - Cheers!!

Qunniy Zapp - Nippy, easy and cool!

Hi there - thought I'd join in on the Quninny Zapp debate! I've got two children a 3 year old and a 6 month old baby, and I'm a childminder!I've been through a mothercare detour travel system, a mamas and papas aria, a maclaren stroller and I think I've now found the best one - My Zapp! Its SOOOOOOOOOOOO tiny I love it - it means thatI can still have my double buggy in the boot of my car and I can also store my Zapp in there too, perfect as before I had to lug the double out whilst I replaced it with the single etc etc. Both my children love it - I can carry the baby in a carrier whilst the toddler snoozes and the zapp is light enough to still be able to manover the toddler around, the wheels neer 'stick' and jolt the toddler forward as the maclaren did. The zapp seems almost perfect to me -the downsides are the non adjustable heightstraps - slightly too high for my 6 month old, would be better if I could move them down a notch, as a car seat does. Oh and yes the shopping basket, everyone needs one - but true yes EBAY now sells them.I paid

Bomb Fuzes a laymans guide

My names Steve Venus i,m a a collector and researcher of German bomb fuzes i have been asked many times over the past 15years or so to write an articleon the subject.of Bomb Fuzes, here is a brief summary of the subject, which i hope you will find informative. The German ECR (Electrical, Condenser ,Resistance)fuze was first manufactured by Rheinmetall in the 1930,s.it was designed by Hubert Ruhlemann .Between1931 and 1932 trials were carried out in Russiaon the use ofMechanical and Electrical bomb fuzes (as Germany was forbidden to manufacture or produce weapons of war)250 Mechanical and 250 electrical bomb fuzes were tested,it was found that electrical fuzes were far superior.Photograph above shows a sectioned view of the German 50 Kg bomb, less fins..with a type (25)B fuze,DescriptionThe normal type of bomb fuze is110mm long by 50mm wide (measured from the head to the base) the fuze consists of, usually 2 charging pins on the top, belowthis the Shoulder, thismay contains 3 fixing screws, itis this location ,that the various markings are found, consisting of type of fuze ie EIAZ is an electrical impact type, next a ringed number this is very important (see types below) for example (17) is a long delay clockwork fuze, and is housed in a longer case approx 142mm long. Then there is the Triagramme or manufacturers 2 or 3 letter codeie RHS is Rheinmetall (Sommerda) plant, then theyear followed by a batch number ie 2a = batch 2 sub batch A also there is the waffennapt stamp, an eagle with a number.56 is for the Rheinmetall.inspector.ConstructionUsually aluminum, but can be steel,in two parts, the top part containing the pins is theSWITCH BLOCK (contains the trembler switches.)The bottom part contains the various Resistors and capicitors, that contain the electrical charge. At the very bottom of the case is a screw thread, its here that the gaine is attached see picture of a type (15)fuzebelow,The (55) fuze and(89) airburst fuzes are constructedusing tubular steel, instead of aluminum, and areinone piece,as against two.How the ECR fuze worksThe normal ECR fuze is one that is charged elecrtrically on leaving the aircraft, during the bombs fall, the electrical charge trickles through resistors, to a firing condenser. The impact of the bomb landing causes a sensitive vibrator switch to close the circuit and detonate the bomb through a firing bridge (similar to a match head) this creates a flash that detonates the sensitive penthrite wax contained in the attached gaine, which is the steel or bakelite container screwed into the base of the fuze (See picture below of gaine attached to a type (15) ECR fuze)(15) with gaine attachedSectioned (25)B Notable 1940 .The Type(25) which replaced the (15) fuze was produced in 9 variations and approx 2.2 million were made.this fuze it is stated arms in 3 seconds? The Fuze type (57) Which was never dropped here in the UK contained a chemical delay, and a Anti Withdrawl device, the delay was up to 100 hours, there was no way to tell how long this fuze had before detonation.the (17) had a delay of 72 hours, but could run as long as 80 hours. It was found that the (25) fuze was expensive to manufacture so the (55) fuze was produced instead, made from 1940 to 1942 a quantity of 840,000 were manufactured ,the case was made of one piece steel , it was found not to be very waterproof , and instances of this fuze being placed in the second fuze pocket of the bomb with its protective cap still in place,.were not uncommon. The Zt Z(89) Fuze at its variantsThe original Zt Z (89) fuze was only about 55 mm long as apposed to the more normal 110mm fuzes.and came in three types The inside of this fuzecontains a clockwork mechanism ,very similar to the long delay (17) fuze it is manufactured by theJurgens clock factory that still makes clocks today. This clock ran for a maximum of 80 seconds , the delay being varied by pushing down the centreplate and turning it , using a special setting tool , the case constructionis alimininum .The (89)B version had a delay from 1 to 80 seconds and was the normal full length fuze of 110 mm and was constructed of rolled steel, next came the (89)C version this had a minimum delay of 2 seconds and a maximum of 160 seconds .Markings on thecharging plate reads "NUR FUR HAND EINSTELLUNG" which translates as "ONLY FOR HAND SETTING".If you have any questions , please do not hesitate to contact meSteve Venus

Points to avoid. We use this guide purley based as a free help guide - we will not comment on other items for sale or items purchased. More and more people are buying from ebay instead of purchasing from the internet.Ebay is unfortunately flooded with mass amounts of fake autographs offered for sale from various sellers. If you are new to hobby you should be very wary of who you buy from and firstly do some research into autographs otherwise you may buy a worthless fake. See picture below of a fake signed Pele, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Rivaldo Brazil shirt look at how similar the handwriting is on shirt all the same consistent style. When Items Get Damaged In The Post

When Items Get Damaged In The PostThis guide is to assist buyers and sellers dealing with an item damaged in the post. Sadly some parcels and letters do get damaged and here is how best to resolve that situation:Buyer - you will be the one to discover that the item has been damaged in the post as it will arrive with you in a poor condition - possibly having been repackaged by Royal Mail. As soon as possible you should contact your seller to advise that the item has arrived damaged.Seller - when your buyer advises that the item has arrived damaged you should try to ascertain the nature of the damage:Outer packaging ripped open / otherwise damaged: - in this eventuality the item will almost certainly have been reparcelled by RM in a clear plastic bag. If the contents are intact and not damaged, this should not be a serious issue but you may wish to consider a partial refund if the buyer paid extra for special delivery.Contents smashed / ripped / damaged: - in this eventuality, I would always ask the buyer to send a photograph of the damage - this can be as an attachment to an email. If the photograph shows damage, then it is usual practise to ask the buyer to return the item to you (by trackable means) so that you can inspect the item and check your security markings (ie to make sure it is the same item you sent and not a similar but broken item the buyer already had). This is particularly relevent to higher priced items. If however the item is lower value and has been damaged beyond repair - such as a set of smashed sherry glasses or a broken ornament - then there is probably no point in asking the buyer to return it as you will not be able to repair it or re-sell it.Buyer - you should comply with the seller's requests to supply proof of damage. A clear photograph taken with a digital camera can be sent as an email attachemnt. The seller may require the item to be returned to them and, again, you should comply with this but make sure you send the item by trackable means in case you later need to make a paypal claim.Seller - If you accept that your item has arrived damaged, you should refund thebuyer in full. If the buyer has returned the item to you, you couldalso refund return postage costs but this is at your discretion. If the item is not broken (for example a piece of electrical equipment that the buyer may have not known how to work) you should advise the buyer and send it back to them (by trackable means). If the item the buyer has sent back to you is not your original item (for example a similar but broken piece of electrical equipment) you should contact the buyer to ensure that a genuine error has not occurred. In the event of fraud being attempted, you should report the matter to the Police. There is an excellent eBay Guide on 'Reporting Fraud to the Police'.Buyer - once the seller has decided to issue a refund this should be completed within a reasonable time. If the refund is not forthcoming you may open a paypal claim (within 45 days of auction end) to obtain a refund. The claim is called 'Significantly Not As Described' SNAD) and will entitle you to a full refund less return postage costs. You will have to return the item by trackable means and enter the tracking number online.Seller - if the damage is a result of bad handling by the Post Office you can make a claim for compensation. For items sent by a standard service, you will require a proof of posting certificate and will need to complete a form available from the Post Office - you will be able to claim up to

Juicy Couture Stuff

Buyers beware! When purchasing juicy couture items on ebay always ensure you ask the seller lots of questions and check the items thoroughly when you recieve them. If the item is from abroad,I would be sceptical. If there is a shop nearby, I would even take the item and ask the salespeople to check if it is authentic or not.I have had a bad experience lately and don't want the same thing to happen to anyone else.Hope this was helpful.

What Size is HO Scale Trains and Does Size Matter?

The Official Consumers Guide to: What Size is HO Scale Model TrainsHobby Railroading and Model TrainsThere are more than 300,000 railroading hobbyists (and yes... most of us are quite normal thank you!).And they cover a diverse group of people. Retires, blue collarworkers, professionals and even children! The common thread betweenall these folks is the love of trains and an eye for details...While there are many different hobbies, I think you will findElectric Model Steam Trains and railroading a satisfying and challenging hobby that will give youhours and hours of enjoyment -- operating the model trains. It isamazing what you can do with them. You can create a "story" in thelayout. You can remotely decouple and recouple trains. The sky is thelimit. So what do YOU want your model steam train to do?Definition of ScaleThescale of the trains refer to the proportion of the model train whencompared to the real train. Pretty simple huh? For instance, if youare wondering what size is HO scale, the HO scale is 1/87. So you could say that your HO model Steam trainis 87 times smaller than the real train out in the train yard. Thereis 6 most common types of scales in railroading. But 90% of all therairoading hobbyists are in just two scales -- HO and N. There aredifferences between the two that you may not be aware of and shouldknow if you are just starting out in this hobby. Continue reading to find out more...HO Scale Trains HO Scale Mantua 2-6-6-2 Articulated HO Scale Mantua 0-6-0 Goat Switcher AsI mentioned above, HO scale is 1/87th of the real size. And HO scaleis by far the most popular scale for model railroading, 74-80 percentof the hobbyists build in that scale. Also, HO scale is HALF of the O scale and hence HO -- "Half O" Scale.Get it? Now, modeling in the HO scale gives you wider options and muchmore variety to choose from than any other scale. That is because HOscale is the most popular scale among hobbyists and model trainmanufacturers have a big market that demands variety. Makes sensehuh? Also, HO scale trains, buildings and scenics are big enough toeasily add detailing to make your railroading layout more realistic. By the way, my favorite tipis to take pictures of the real train engine that most resembles yourmodel train. Then figure out how to add the identical marks, dirt andgrime to the steam train to make it look like a working train. And besure to take a look at the picture I took showing the comparison of theN scale and HO scale train side by side.

There were only 200 of this colour released world-wide (explained in section 2 part 1) so it is extremely unlikely that he would have so many in his possession and, if he did, he would not be selling them on auction at such a low starting price and with no reserve. Military

Having been trading in Cigarette silks (Mainly with a Military Theme) for over 5 years and particularly the last 3 on ebay, I get asked the same questions from buyers and interested partys regularly. So i will attempt to put the answers here as the information is neither readily available or accurate...I often get asked "What is a Cigarette Silk?" and for those who dont already know, It is a small peice of Printed (or woven) Satin (Almost never Silk) given away free inside Yester-years cigarette packets in the same manner as cigarette cards. Sometimes they came on a backing card or in a paper packet and more often than not with nothing at all. With the passing of years they have become increasingly collectable and valueable.......One of the most common misconceptions I hear(And have read in print) goes as follows"Silks came about during WW1 due to the paper shortage making cigarette cards impossible or to expensive"..While this may be a possible contributing factor to the rise in popularity of Silks, It is most definatley not thesole factor.....There were silk issues in the USA from the lateVictorian period and the UKs ownGodfrey Phillipshad issued over 20 different seriesbetween 1910 and the outbreak of war...Also a fair few series were issued with card or paper backs making the paper shortage theory incredulous..Although there were many different subject matters with the Outbreak of WW1 the Military Badges and Regimental Colours, Uniforms, Medals,Regimental Crests, Warshipsand War Heroes became the order of the day, especially for the male smokers...Although during the war there were lots of companys issuing silks, By far the most prolific Issuer in the UK was Godfrey Phillips, they issued more silks than all the other Uk makers combined...Their B.D.V. Brand was very popular at the time and many examples can still be easily found cheaply today...They also issued as many unbranded or anonymous silks in thier other brands of tobacco and Cigarettes and many silks were isssued by other tobacco companys after they amalgamated with Phillips.....Other UK Tobacco Companys who issued silks were: E

Military items for sale - Beware

Beware of people selling items such as Combat Body Armour, SUSAT sights or PRR radio systems, they could well be stolen!I have researched with the Defence Logistics Organisation and have ascertained that many such items are NOT disposed of legitimately through the Defence chain to civilian buyers. In short this means that if someone is offering for sale a SUSAT sight system, then it could well be stolen property!!!The upshot of this is that when an investigation takes place, either the Royal Military Police or the Ministry of Defence Police could be knocking on your door to recover the stolen property as evidence at a criminal trial and you may end up giving evidence at a Courts Martial as a witness!I'm not saying that all such items definitely ARE stolen, merely pointing out that it could be the case. Also be very aware of sellers use of the terms 'SAS' 'Special Forces' etc. Most of the items they are selling are standard issue kit to ALL members of the British Army, but use of such terms generally inflates prices because of peoples fascination with the Special Forces.

DO NOT! BUY BT NETWORK PAGERS!!!!!!!!!

Just a quick note to all of you who are thinking of buying a pager. Do not buy a pager that is on the BT or O2network as this service has been out of service for around 2 years. If you do buy a pager on this BT or O2 network the pager will not be able to receive any kind of message, it will basically only be good as an alarm clock. Make sure that you buy a pager that is on the (Pageone) network, as this npaging network is still active and they say that they plan to be around for a hell of a long time.Check the internet by typing in bt paging you will find lots of info saying that this paging service has been terminated.Hope this helps

PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM HAYFEVER

This is now my 2nd guide and since my first guide is about how to protect yourself from fraudulent/scams on ebay and is a success which i believe has helped many people, I thought why not write a guide about how people can overcome Hayfever.I Myself am a hayfever sufferer and for others who have hayfever - I am asure you are aware how it can ruin your summer. Well follow my tips and i can assure you your next summer will be better than the rest.REMEMBER: Anyone can have hayfever. You can be born with it like me or you can develop symptons any time of the year (summer mainly). The common type of hayfever is allergic to pollen from grass but you do get others who are allegic to tree pollen as well.Preventions (when indoor):Always close all windows and doors to prevent pollen from getting in. Even on a hot summers day where pollen count will be high. This is when it is good to have AC.Try not to hang clothes outside to dry as pollen can stick to them but dry them inside.Wash and change your clothes everyday especially when you have been outside. If you've been outdoor, have a shower and wash your hair to remove any excess pollen.Preventions (when outdoor): If you are going out and you know your going to be going on grass or near follow these steps:Have any medication first that your doctor prescribe or you bought over the counter - i found the benadryl allergy relief tablets to be the best and most expensive as well Nasal spray/eye drops all these helpGet a good night sleep the day before. This is vital to help build a stronger immune system.WEAR SUNGLASSES - This is probably the best help as it worked best for me on a hot day walking on grass - hayfever did not affect me and i am a strong sufferer but until they broke at the end which is when i suffered bad :(Place a thin layer of vaseline around the inside of the nasal area (nose). Helps to stop the pollen going in any further.Try Homeothapy - natural soutions to help cure hayfever. Try brands such as weleda. I have a spare one brand new not been opened for

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SCAMMERS ON EBAY PAYPAL!!!

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROMRIP-OFF SCAMMERSON EBAY PAYPAL!!!Ebay once used to be a safe place to buy and sell but since fraudsters have discovered this, they will do anything to make money. Below is a list of how to protect yourself from fraudsters and scammers.Always look at other ebayers feedback rating, this is important becasue it tells you their trading history on Ebay. If they have numerous negative comments which make them sound un-trustworthy, then its best to contact them first or leave it and look else where. If they have no feedback and are new, it is best again to contact them. Never buy or sell to places from abroad such as Nigeria, Africa etc. These are again fraudsters using stolen credit cards and if they do pay you, well that money is guaranteed to be stolen which will be retracted from your account so you would lose out basically. Always email or contact them some other way if unsure. At least this way, you'll know about their communication standards. Ask for a tracking number for a valuable item. This way you can track the item and you'll know that they have sent it. Never bid/buy from ebayers who claim to have 20* Nokia 8800's, 20* Samsung D600's etc (you get the picture). This is becasue it is all fraudulent. They do not have an verified email address which is why they ask you to email them from another email address stated on the listing, once they recieved the money they will withdraw this and close the account, and theyu wont send anything. Plus Ebay cannot do anything as it is too early for them to do anything. If you do get into a fraudulent situation, contact the seller/buyer, if they dont reply, contact Ebay and paypal, then if they cannot do anything, contact your credit card company (by law you are protected from any fraudulent activity for 7/14 days) Dont leave it too late. You can contact the police as well, they will issue you a crime number, send this to the fraudulent ebayer, they may read your emails but just wont reply, if you show them a crime number, they would probably be scared and give you the money back. Request their contact details as well by searching it on help, at least you'll know where they live and their contact number. Always pay using paypal, you know you'll be covered. I think Nochex covers you as well. Wonder why people put a reserve on their listings, well it is to protect themselves from bid shielding. This is where two and more ebayers target a listing for example, samsung D600 with a starting price of 0.99 and no reserve. The first fraudster will come along and place a bid of 0.99, the second fraudster will come along and place a bid of about

*Lozzy*s -- Guide To Ear Lobe Stretching

What is stretching?Stretching is the means by which one can gradually enlarge a pierced hole in the body. This is done by slightly stretching the tissue, causing micro-tears to form, and maintaining the hole at the new size until these tears completely heal. The process is then repeated. This can be done a virtually unlimited number of times as long as it is done correctly, thus allowing for extremely stretched holes to be produced. How often should I stretch; how long does it take to heal?Stretching is a very individual activity, and there is no set time frame that will work for everyone. You should only stretch when your ears are completely healed. As a general rule, most people feel that their ears are healed after approximately 1 month. When you feel that your ears are healed, then wait another 2-3 weeks before stretching. A good rule of thumb is one stretch every other month.Maximum size that will heal up (otherwise known as the 'growing up' complex)This question pops up quite regularly, and unfortunately, the answer is extremely vague. Everyone's body is different, and therefore everyone's lobes will shrink up to a different point. Generally speaking, 2 gauge is widely considered the 'point of no return' - where your lobes become significantly less likely to heal even to the size of a standard earring.Stretching is not an exact science and should not be taken lightly. There is never any guarantee that your ears will shrink back up. If you are going to stretch, please make sure that you will be comfortable at that size as an old wrinkly person, and with having your children and grandchildren ask you why you have huge holes in your ears. Stretching Methods:Before even discussing stretching methods, it is important to discuss proper waiting periods. When stretching, you need to only stretch one size at a time (14-12, 12-10, etc.) - and you MUST wait until your ears are completely healed before stretching again.TaperingTapering is the most effective way to stretch your ears with minimal stress. To taper your lobes, you first need to procure a taper (a metal or acrylic device that tapers from your ending gauge down to your starting gauge - for example, the large end would be a 10 gauge

Feedback ..Good and bad.....

Feedback is a great way to let other ebayers know if the seller/buyer is reliable, honest etc.As a buyer I check that the seller has a good positive feedback response and I personally would not buy from a seller with less than a 90% positive feeback rate. However you cant please all the people all the time as the saying goes, so if you really like an item it may be worth checking why the negative feedback was left. I have had negative feeback left from a buyer because the t-shirt that I posted was removed from the packing after it had been posted. Now this is my fault because??Also if a seller has gone from getting feedback for selling the a few clothes now and then and has suddenly started listing

beware p p costs when buying model planes

i have been an avid collector of 1/200 scale model aircraft, and to date have bought in the region of 80 models through ebay, but occasionally you get the odd one who decides to charge way over the top for delivery.
a single model that is boxed and posted in a jiffy bag would cost around 50 pence to send, add to that the cost of the jiffy bag(30p) and the costs imposed by paypal(if you pay that way) normally around 10-50p tops would give you a figure around the

helium balloon kits can now be hired or purchased (hiring is cheapest), including your choice of baloons and curling ribbons. The Perfect Winter Rug for your Horse

The perfect winter rug for your horse
Think about how your horse will live this winter - will he be stabled all the time? Turned out all the time or maybe half and half (the majority of leisure horses in the uk are kept partially stabled with daytime turnout.)
The type of your horse will also play an important part - thin skinned thoroughbreds are far more susceptible to the cold than a hairy highland.

Second Chance Offer scam - BEWARE

There is a scam going around with second chance offers.
Basically, you bid on an item and find that you get outbid by the close of auction. Hey ho, never mind. But then within a day or so, you get contacted by the seller to see if you still are interested in the item, as the highest bidder has not completed the purchase. Sounds great, as they offer it to you at the price you offered or maybe even a bit less to entice you into the deal.
However, the seller does not set up a legitimate ebay second chance You then get asked to send the money via Western Union (or similar 3rd party) for safety and tell you to send your address so they can get things in motion. This is clearly to steer you away from the safety of ebay and an attempt to do the deal outside of the site. If you do this,

BEWARE of The "Item Never Received" Scam

The "Item Never Received" Scam
This scam is often aimed at sellers who participate in a lot if auctions on ebay, and the scam is mainly used with low value or uninsured items (this is because most high priced items are insured for safety).

First the scammer finds an item up for sale that he/she is interested in. The scammer then bids on the item until he/she has won the auction.
Once the auction is over the scammer sends payment to the seller and the seller sends the scammer the item.
The scammer receives his/her item, waits a few weeks, and then emails the seller falsely claiming the item has not arrived.
The seller does everything he/she can to locate the package, but this proves to be unsuccessful (they have no chance of locating the item because it is in the scammer's possession).
Since the item is probably not worth a lot of money (items over $50 are usually insured and delivery can be confirmed) the seller often chooses to refund the scammer's money rather then risk negative feedback.
When all is said and done, the seller is without his/her item or money, and the scammer gets away with a free item.

Is it NEW ! ! or Sold as NEW 1 ! !

Its listed as new until you receive your item and find out it is infact secondhand and in many cases its not even in a new condition. Does this sound familiar ?
Ebay has made many sussessful sellers over the years but unfortuantly they are many sellers now who have learned if they list as new they get more money, most of these seller are pat time seller and as such you generally find out they is nothing you can do about it.
We have noticed especially over the past 12 months a significant increase in this, everyday we must receive several emails asking if our goods are brand new or in a new condition.
Here are our simple guides to beating the cheats-

Always checkout the sellers feedback.
Try to choose a experienced seller with many feedbacks.
A professional seller will list full product details and disclose accurate condition of the product.
A seller selling 100 items per month with a good feedback score can be trusted.
But a seller only selling a few items a month with low feedback is a much higher risk.
If you do have any questions dont hesitate to contact the seller and a professioanl seller should reply back within 24hrs.
If a seller is a square trade varified member they they are much safer to trade with as square trade has certain criterias that must be met before a seller is accepted.
Still not sure then contact past buyers and ask how they was dealt with.
These are just a few things that will ensure you a safer sale.
Unfortunatly these bad sellers make it harder for legitimate sellers here on ebay.
We are a UK registered business, with many feedbacks, square trade varified and carry a very good record. We deal with official UK pal video games, accessories and consoles. This guide was written due to the vast amount of questions received about condition of goods.
One last thing ! ! !
Follow our guide but most of all have fun at ebay as well as saving some money.

The advantages and disadvantages of E-books.

Im sure if you are a regular user of eBay you will have come across an "e-Book" on your travels! E-Books (Electronic Books) are becoming increasingly popular on eBay with many high profile sellers choosing to sell e-Books over your standard hardback/paperback book. Before I start looking at the advantages and disadvantages here is a brief description of an e-Book!
What is an E-Book?
The term "e-Book" stands for "Electronic Book". It is exactly the same as a regular book, however e-Books can be read on your PC and are usually delivered via email therefore saving on any postage costs. E-Books usually come in two formats:

.PDF - These can be opened in Adobe Acrobat reader
.EXE - These can be opened on any Windows PC without the need for any additional software to be installed, they wont however run on MAC`s.
Advantages of E-Books

Here are some advantages of an e-Book:
No shipping costs, delivered via email
Print off as many copies as you like in your own time
A lot of e-Books come with resale rights so you can sell them again numerous times over after you have bought them!
The price - You can find most e-Books floating around eBay for as little as 99p!
Information is available in e-Books that you cant find in regular books
They are searchable -

Buy or make wiccan pagan occult supplies

Buying or making your supplies explained.Merry meet to all.I have recently started up my business after years of practising what is commonly known as magic or the craft (witchcraft). For years I have found prices rising for items that should be personal and useful to my faith. Since opening my store I have been asked on many an occasion whether it is better to buy or make your own items for use in spells and rituals. To be honest there is no correct answer to this but i have decided to write a quick guide for people either wishing to learn or getting confused on what they need to do and have. There is no right way to practise wicca, paganism or witchcraft this is down to personal preference, witches pagans and wiccans are not evil and do not cast hexes on people (not unless they want serious reprocussions) Most wiccans and witches have an area where they have a small/medium or large Altar. On this altar you can include many items, some of which you can not make yourself and some which you can collect and make taking hours or a few seconds to do.Atheme- a type of dagger double sided yet not sharp as this is not meant for cutting, it is meant for rituals to connect a god to goddess which is generally explained in most viable literature on the subject. It is not made for killing or sacraficing any living being. Most people will tel you that you can not make an Atheme as they are genarally metal with a black handle, however i have seen some made from wood with a leather bound black handle, i would expect to pay around

NEGATIVE FEEDBACKS

New ebay policy is great ehh , for buyers but not for sellers, recent transactions on our account have seen many bids being placed and no money coming in due to time wasters, i would automatically generate a negative feedback for these in order that others sellers can be warned, but ebay in its wild wisdom thinks this is unfair to leave buyers negative and directs you to a dispute consul which has always been there. this then allows you to get your fees back, a process which was already in force, so what is in it for the sellers, no negative feedbacks or neutrals can be left. Luminous Dials on WW1 Officer's Trench Watches

Luminous Dials on WW1 Officer's Trench WatchesSome vintage watches, especially military watches, had the numerals and hands on the dial
made luminous or "glow in the dark" by painting them with luminous paint.
This paint was not like the luminous compounds used in todays watches; it was made
with a mixture of radium, which emits radioactivity, and zinc sulphide, which
"fluoresces" (glows
brightly) when hit by the radiation from the radium. This paint glowed all
the time, day and night, without needing exposure to sunlight,
and continued to glow for years on end.
However, after some time, maybe twenty to fifty years, the zinc sulfide is worn out or
destroyed by the radiation from the radium,
so the paint no longer glows in the dark - but the radium is still there emitting radiation.
Luminous radium paint on dials was first used around 1910, before the dangers of
radioactivity were fully understood. Although health problems in workers using radium
paints were noticed in the late 1920s, radium paint continued to be used up until
about 1950. If your watch was made before 1950, and has thick
paint, often off-white or yellowish, on the hands or dial numerals, the likelihood is
that the paint was made with radium, even if it no longer glows in the dark at all.
The half-life of radium-226 is about 1,620 years, so over the 100 or so years since
a watch dial was painted with luminous paint, the radium will have decayed about 4%.
Paint that was made with radium 100 years ago will
still be 96% as radioactive today as the day it was made, even if it no longer glows in the dark. Radium and its fission decay products (such as radon-222 gas) have the potential to cause various health
risks, and therefore watches with this paint should be handled carefully and in ways to minimize these risks. There is no need to panic if you have such a watch. They are reasonably safe to
wear on a once-in-a-while basis, but it probably would not be sensible to wear it all the time, i.e. every day, and certainly don't
sleep in it, or keep it on your bedside table. The more significant danger occurs when
working on such a watch, and one should be particularly careful not to breathe in any of
the paint or its dust. The best way to make sure that there is no risk is to have the
radium based paint removed and replaced by a paint that looks the same but is not radioactive.
Naturally this needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing, so don't try
this at home! However, you also need to be careful that you are not damaging the authenticity of the watch by having this done. I have had an Omega dial where about half the luminous paint had flaked off restored, and now it looks much better than it did before, and the paint reproduces the old paint very well so you wouldn't know that it had been replaced. But the watch shown here is now back from from being restored and the dial painter has used a modern super-lume paint which really doesn't look like the old paint, so it has changed the look of the watch from an old-but-genuine specimen to being a very "clean" looking watch that has obviously been restored. I personally would have liked to keep the "old" look to it. So you need to think carefully before having this work done, and make sure the dial painter can reproduce the authentic look of the watch. The picture on the left shows one of my watches, a black dial trench watch which has
radium paint on the hands and numerals. As you can see, the thick yellowish paint is
quite distinctive against the fine white details of the enamelled dial. This
is typical of radium luminised dials, and should enable you to easily recognise one. I
guess that they made the paint by mixing the radium and zinc sulphide into a varnish or laquer, which
was applied quite thickly to get a good level of luminosity, making it difficult to produce fine detail.
You can see some of the paint has
flaked away from the enamel dial, particularly on the 9, just like a thick varnish would.
Further information for persons working with watches that have this type of luminous paint
on the hands and dials can be found in a UK Health and Safety Executive paper "Hazards from luminised timepieces in watch/clock repair" which can be found by a web search for this title.
I bought a radiation detector so that I can test my own watches for radium based
luminous paint. I am glad that I did - the first watch that I tried it on, the same black dial
trench watch with plenty of luminous paint left on the dial, sent it beserk, as you can see below.
I am planning to get the dial refinished to remove the luminous paint before I wear it. It seems
a shame to remove the historic paint that has been there for so long, but having heard
the frantic reaction of the radiation detector once it gets anywhere near the watch, I don't feel that
I have any choice on health grounds. I now offer a service to test your watch
for radiation, including a certificate stating what I find. This would be useful for
your own peace of mind, or if you are thinking of selling your watch, especially if
you have had the dial repainted to remove the radium. If you are interested in this service, please
drop me a line.
The first picture shows the radiation detector reading 0.14 micro sievert per hour
background level, which is pretty normal, and the alarm level set by the factory at
0.3 micro sievert per hour. The second picture shows the effect of putting the watch
next to the detector: the level jumps to 1.92 micro sievert per
hour and the audible alarm goes beserk. In the manual accompanying the detector, it says
". . . if a dose rate of more than 1.20 micro sievert per hour
is displayed, it is necessary to leave the zone urgently . . ." I certainly
won't be wearing this watch until the luminous paint has been removed, and I will be
treating it pretty cautiously in the meantime!I hope you have found this guide helpful. If you have then I would be grateful if you would register a vote for it. If
you haven't found it helpful for some reason, or if you think that there is something wrong or that could be
improved, then please let me know. Thanks! Regards - David

Postage Stamps And Postal History Of Australia

This is an overview of the postage stamps and postal history of Australia.
The various colonies that joined to form the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 had long operated their own postal systems; see the articles on the systems of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia for the respective details. At federation the Commonwealth was granted the power to operate a central postal system through Section 51(v) of the Australian Constitution. Although unification of systems was expected to occur quickly, and a federal postmaster general was appointed, the process was delayed for several years; the stamps of each colony were not recognized by other colonies until 1910, and postal rates only became uniform throughout Australia on 1 May 1911. The Postmaster-General's department eventually became Australia Post in the 1970s - see that article for more details of the organizational aspects of Australia's postal system.

Although one-penny postcards and lettercards appeared in 1911, for most students of the area, Australian philately proper begins in early 1913 with the Kangaroo and Map series of stamps, featuring a kangaroo standing on a map of Australia, and inscribed "AUSTRALIA POSTAGE". The first issue of the series consisted of 15 values ranging from a half penny to two pounds. The watermark was the first of several variations on the "A surmounted by a crown" theme, in this case the "wide crown and wide A". Kangaroo and Map stamps were reprinted several times: in 1915 with first the "wide crown and narrow A" watermark, then the "narrow crown and narrow A"; in 1929 with the "multiple small crown and A" watermark, and higher values in two colors; in 1932 with the "multiple small crown and C of A" watermark. In December 1945 the series ended with a redrawn two-shilling stamp. Most of the Kangaroo and Map stamps are readily available today, although values of 5 shillings and up are expensive.

1913 also saw the first profile of King George V, a one-penny value in carmine. A cleaner version of the design was issued in 1914, and various denominations appeared from time to time, along with changes of watermark, as late as 1932. A 6-penny stamp depicting a kookaburra appeared in 1914 as well.
The Commonwealth's first commemorative stamp was issued on 9 May 1927 to mark the opening of Parliament House in Canberra. Commemmoratives began appearing regularly in the 1930s, typically as sets of two to four of the same design, with the low value common and the higher values issued in much smaller numbers.
The accession of George VI in 1937 was the occasion for a new definitive series of 14 designs, featuring both portraits of the new King and Queen, as well as Australia's unique animals, including the kangaroo, kookaburra, koala, platypus, and the commercially important Merino sheep. In 1938 the King and Queen portraits on the low values were re-engraved for improved appearance, and in 1942 they were superseded by new designs, along with a 5 1/2p value depicting an emu.

New definitives from 1950 on showed an older George and Elizabeth, then gave way in 1953 to a profile of Elizabeth II. 1953 also saw the curious "PRODUCE FOOD!" stamps, depicting scenes from the butter, wheat, and beef industries, and issued to encourage food production. A 1956 issue for the Olympic Games being held in Melbourne included early examples of stamps printed in full color, and in 1957 Australia's first Christmas stamp began an annual tradition.
The definitive series of 1959 used various portraits of the Queen for its low values, and a variety of plants and animals for the higher ones. Fluorescent paper began to be used in the 1960s. A series of 1963 included birds and well-engraved portraits of early explorers and their ships for values going up to two pounds.
The introduction of decimal currency necessitated a new series of definitives in 1966. Values from 1c to 5c used the same portrait of the Queen, in different colors, while higher values included sea life in addition to the 1963 designs redrawn with decimal values; for instance, the 4-shilling Abel Tasman of 1963 became a 40c stamp of 1966.
Stamp-issuing policy was relatively restrained in the 1970s, but in the 1980s and 1990s, considerable numbers of stamps began to appear, and many miniature sheets were overprinted for local stamp shows.
